This term so far in Year 2, our budding mathematicians have been diving into the essential concept of place value.
This unit lays the foundation for all future number work and helps children develop a strong understanding of how numbers are structured.
Through a range of practical activities and visual aids, the children have been learning to recognise the value of each digit in a two-digit number. They’ve been grouping tens and ones using base-ten equipment, number lines, and part-whole models to build and partition numbers up to 100. This hands-on approach has really helped bring numbers to life!
We’ve also been comparing and ordering numbers, identifying greater and smaller values, and using mathematical language such as more than, less than, and equal to. It’s been fantastic to see the children grow in confidence as they begin to understand how numbers are built and broken down.
Ask your child to show you how to build a number using tens and ones at home—you might be surprised at how well they explain it!
We’re proud of the progress all students are making and look forward to seeing them apply their place value knowledge in addition and subtraction next!
