Pupils are taught in classes for most academic subjects, streamed into regularly re-assessed learning groups for Maths and English. We employ a thematic approach to learning, where subjects are interconnected through exciting themes like ‘Temples, Tombs & Treasures,’ ‘Scavengers & Settlers,’ or ‘Vanishing Rainforests.’ These engaging topics not only spark imagination but also make learning memorable and fun, tying together the children’s academic journey in a meaningful way.

It is incredibly rewarding to be a part of our pupils’ journeys through Lower School, as they develop a clearer sense of identify and experience a remarkable growth in confidence that is truly palpable.

Lower School introduces pupils to their first residential trip, an exciting experience that combines fun with essential skill-building. These residentials are thoughtfully designed to nurture independence, teamwork, initiative, and leadership. Starting with short stays of one or two nights at nearby locations, pupils are gently prepared for longer and more adventurous trips as they progress through Middle and Upper School. In addition, Lower School also offers the first opportunity for pupils to experience boarding, a transformative experience that fosters key social and life skills. Both boarding and residentials teach children to live alongside their peers from a young age, cultivating empathy, care, and consideration for others.

The Lower School offers pupils exclusive use of a dedicated building, featuring spacious, light-filled classrooms designed to create a calm and inviting educational environment. Each child has a class base, where they spend a significant portion of their day with their classmates and class teacher. This teacher plays a pivotal role in both their academic journey and their pastoral care, serving as a supportive, approachable adult who is always available to listen and guide.

Lower School pupils enjoy specialist teaching in Sport (including Swimming), Music, Drama, French, Art, Design Technology and Computing, for which they make use of our specialist facilities. These subject specialists not only broaden the children's experiences but also ignite a deeper passion for learning. Their expertise and enthusiasm inspire curiosity and excitement, while gently introducing pupils to the wider school community, making their transition through Feltonfleet smooth and confident.

By the end of Lower School, pupils have a strong sense of belonging and a clear, exciting vision of their journey ahead through Middle School.
