Upper School | Academic | Feltonfleet School

The final stage of Destination 13, Upper School marks the conclusion of the Feltonfleet experience and the progression to some of the best senior schools in the country.

Upper School pupils follow a broad and rich curriculum which prepares them for this milestone and beyond, which has academic rigour at its heart, along with a focus on essential study skills. Independence, collaboration and leadership are emphasised throughout, and pupils flourish in assuming wider responsibilities within the Feltonfleet community, from taking meaningful leadership roles to representing the school at the highest level in sporting, creative and academic spheres. As the school’s role models, we encourage our Upper School pupils to widen their responsibilities across the school and take on leadership roles to assist in the smooth running of the school. Pupils flourish given these positions of leadership and responsibility, from planning and leading charity events to representing the School in sporting, creative and academic spheres.

A strong academic tutorial system exists to guide pupils through their learning, where progress is reviewed and next steps are established. Pupils become adept at reflecting on their progress and they each maintain an online reflective diary of their studies.

Form groups remain a key element of our Pastoral Care Framework, with Form Tutors playing a key role in helping pupils navigate any challenges that arise and celebrate successes.

Upper School offers a transformative experience; where pupils gain a deep sense of self while navigating friendships and hormones, experiencing successes and setbacks, all within a safe and nurturing environment that supports them every step of the way.

We offer a Scholarship Programme, for talented pupils who wish to engage in extra enrichment activities to further stretch their capabilities and prepare for potential senior school scholarship applications. The scholarship programme celebrates the high standards and high hopes of our most talented and committed pupils, challenging them to excel in their chosen specialism, and, in turn, opening further doors and bestowing life-changing opportunities. Our Feltonfleet scholars enrich our school community, as they give time and energy to developing their area of specialism, becoming role models for their peers through their dedication and commitment to broadening their knowledge and skills. In return they are afforded a vast array of enrichment opportunities beyond the curriculum, to work on creative projects, access visiting experts, enhance problem-solving skills and benefit from a range of external visits and experiences.

As in Middle School, Upper School pupils are taught every lesson by passionate subject specialists. Moving around the site for each lesson, they benefit from our state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide the ideal learning environment for every subject. Our subject specialists are experts in their fields, and their enthusiasm is contagious. They inspire pupils with their passion, stretch their understanding with deep insights, and enrich their learning experience with expert knowledge. Pupils are generally taught in their Form groups, but are streamed into regularly re-assessed learning groups for Maths, English, Science (taught as the separate sciences of Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Languages (children generally opt for 2 languages from French, Spanish and Latin).

Upper School pupils use their own personal iPads, loaned to them for the duration of Middle and Upper School, which remain a key element of their digital citizenship. Our Pupil iPad Programme is built around the values of Responsibility and Respect, and enhances personalised learning, boosts organisation, encourages creative productivity, and opens up new avenues for collaboration and communication.

As pupils transition into Upper School, their residentials and boarding experiences become even more exciting and immersive, perfectly suited to their growing maturity. Longer, more adventurous residential trips challenge them to step outside their comfort zones and navigate unfamiliar environments, fostering resilience and adaptability. Meanwhile, boarding life deepens their sense of responsibility and self-reliance, as they balance increasingly demanding academic workloads with the responsibilities of being role models in the boarding community. These transformational experiences are invaluable in preparing them for senior school, particularly for those who will continue their journey with boarding.

The Pre-Senior Baccalaureate curriculum in Feltonfleet’s Upper School places a strong emphasis on agile learning, critical thinking, independence, and intellectual curiosity, mirroring the core values of our learning environment.
