Study Skills | Academic | Feltonfleet School

At Feltonfleet, each pupil’s academic journey is centred on building essential skills that maximise learning outcomes, foster a growth mindset and empower pupils to think independently, question critically and develop a deep understanding of the world around them.

We focus on six essential skills that are explicitly taught and integrated throughout our curriculum, with the same rigour as academic subjects:

  • Collaboration
  • Communicating
  • Independence
  • Leadership
  • Reviewing and Improving
  • Thinking and Learning

The skills gap at 18 puts significant pressure on young people and is a direct consequence of the academic focus of the education system. The lack of these skills is making the transition harder, and may have an impact on retention at university and, more generally, the success of UK business.
Professor Sir Roy Anderson, author of The Pearson Report

Our goal is to develop confident and capable learners – pupils who are ready, willing and able to choose, design, research, pursue, troubleshoot, and evaluate their learning, both individually and collaboratively. By embedding these skills across our educational provision, we aim to:

  • Strengthen pupils' sense of personal responsibility toward their studies
  • Elevate academic achievement by fostering independent, confident, and effective learners
  • Boost self-esteem and encourage the development of self-reflection
  • Give pupils greater awareness and understanding of personal learning styles
  • Help pupils achieve and maintain mental fitness
  • Improve pupils’ motivation and drive for academic success

Our objective is to equip pupils with the skills they’ll need for success well beyond prep school - at GCSE, A Level, university, and in life. By Destination 13, they’re not just prepared for senior school, they're already thriving as independent, capable learners.
