We are delighted to introduce the first book review of the year from our Yr 8 Librarians.
This has been written by Calum S, who comments that “Reading is really important because reading reduces stress so that you do not feel as hyper as you would if you watched a movie. It lets you get immersed in a new world and it makes me so much happier even when I just read for a while. It lets you imagine stories how you want to imagine them which can really mean that you can read the story how you want to. Finally you can always read at your own pace so it never feels too fast or too slow for you”
Calum has reviewed Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It is a very interesting book about a group of children on an island and it really explores human nature and the forces behind them. I love it because it can make you think and it is still also a great book. I would most definitely recommend this book for Upper school pupils.
He also recommends The Night Bus Hero by Onjali Q. Raúf . He says “because it taught me a valuable lesson about how homeless people are mistreated and how people can change for the better. Hector is a 10 year old trouble maker with behavioural problems. He starts the story as a bully and a prankster. He realises he needs to change his behaviour and be a better version of himself.
As a mysterious crime breaks out, he goes to investigate and accuses an innocent homeless man of the crime. The story explores how the homeless can be misinterpreted and misjudged. It follows Hector who initially has a negative view on homelessness. Throughout the story he changes his mind and perceptions. It is one of my favourite books because nobody thinks that Hector, the bully of the school, is a thoughtful and a kind person. Hector works hard to change how people view him and he becomes a better person. I really enjoyed this book because it challenged me to think about homelessness, kindness and giving everybody a second chance”.
