A Day at the Institut Français | News

Our recent Year 8 trip to the French Institute in London was a memorable and enriching experience for all.

The day began with a morning of engaging activities centred around the French animated film Dilili à Paris. Pupils explored key themes, characters, famous monuments and settings from the movie, enhancing their understanding of French language and culture in a creative and thoughtful way.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the beautiful gardens of the Natural History Museum, giving pupils the chance to relax and take in the surroundings before the afternoon’s film.

Back at the Institut Français, we had exclusive access to our own cinema and a private screening of Dilili à Paris. Set in the heart of Belle Époque Paris, the film follows the brave and curious Dilili as she investigates a series of mysterious kidnappings. Along her journey, she meets iconic figures from the worlds of science, art, and philosophy, providing a rich cultural and historical backdrop.

The film offered more than just entertainment - it sparked thoughtful discussion on important topics such as gender equality, social progress, and the fight against prejudice. Pupils were surprised by the contrast between the vibrant, forward-thinking Paris of the time and the darker forces working against change, portrayed by the sinister Male Masters.

Modern Foreign Languages Subject Lead, Edith Horton, said:

"This trip was a brilliant opportunity for our pupils to engage with French language and culture beyond the classroom. Dilili à Paris offered a rich blend of history, art, and social commentary that sparked deep and meaningful discussions. It was wonderful to see our Year 8s respond so thoughtfully – not only practising their language skills, but also reflecting on wider themes of justice, equality and progress."
