Townsend Warner History Success | News

Calum has achieved remarkable success in Paper 1 of the prestigious Townsend Warner History Prize, placing 11th overall — the 6th highest individual score — out of 1,275 entrants from 74 IAPS-affiliated prep schools across the country.

This is a phenomenal achievement that reflects not only Calum’s impressive historical knowledge, but also his ability to think critically and respond with clarity and insight under pressure.

Established in 1885, the Townsend Warner History Prize is one of the most respected academic competitions available to prep school pupils in the UK. Designed to inspire a love of history and reward academic curiosity, it challenges participants to apply their historical understanding across a wide span of world events, with a particular focus on British history.

Paper 1, the first stage of the competition, includes 100 quick-fire questions ranging from major turning points in global history to nuanced details about Britain’s monarchs and milestones. It tests both breadth and depth of knowledge.

Following his exceptional performance in Paper 1, Calum was one of just 250 pupils nationwide to qualify for Paper 2, a rigorous two-hour examination requiring four essay responses. This second stage tests higher-level skills such as analysis, argument construction, and historical interpretation. Candidates are encouraged to draw on both their knowledge and imagination as they explore key historical themes in depth.

History Lead, Melissa Williamson, commented:

"While we await the results of Paper 2, there is no doubt that Calum has already achieved something remarkable. To be placed among the top performers nationally is a testament to his curiosity, dedication, and passion for the subject.
Well done Calum!"
