Matt Kendall Charity Football Tournament

The winning team

On Sunday 13th October 2019, Feltonfleet School hosted the Matt Kendall Charity Football Tournament.  In its third year, the tournament this time involved 16 teams, each representing a European Club, loosely based on the 2018 Champions League.

The tournament was a great advert for what Feltonfleet is really about – community.  Amongst 125 participants, there were a number of current and former Feltonfleet teachers, current and former parents, governors and Feltonfleet old boys of varying ages.  For many people attending, it was an opportunity to re-connect with familiar faces, to catch up and be part of a celebration remembering our former pupil, Matt Kendall.

The tournament was organised to raise money for a small charity called the ‘The Matt Kendall Foundation’.  The Foundation is a very special charity and is particularly close to our hearts.  Matt’s father, Dave, was Deputy Head of the school for over 30 years and was loved and respected by pupils, teachers and staff.  The charity, which aims to help disadvantaged 16-24 year olds achieve their potential through the aid of financial grants, was set up shortly before Matt sadly died of cancer in 2015, aged just 35.  The day is an emotional one for Dave and Linda Kendall, but they are so very grateful that Feltonfleet continues to promote this day in memory of their son.

The tournament was fiercely contested with lots of excellent football on display. This year the winners were Ajax (a team captained by former Head Chef Dan Baldock).

Mr Rochford, who co-ordinated the event, thanked all the staff who volunteered on the day. Without their help, it simply would not have been the success it was.  Over £2000 was raised, a sum that will be used wisely and sensitively for the benefit of a number of disadvantaged young people.
