Assessment Mornings & Taster Days

The main intake ages for Feltonfleet are 3+ (Nursery), 7+ (Year 3) and 11+ (Year 7), although we do consider applications at other ages depending on the availability of spaces.

Once you register your child, that registration is valid for entry at any point and children who are unsuccessful at gaining a place in Nursery remain registered and therefore are automatically eligible to be considered for a place year by year as occasional spaces open up. While some families seek an occasional place, others will join Feltonfleet at 7+ when we expand to three classes per year group.

Entry into our Lower School at 7+ and 8+ (Years 3 and 4)

When are assessments held?

Our Assessment & Discovery Days are held in November and occasionally another date is arranged for the Spring Term. Children come to spend a morning with us.

Assessment dates in November 2018 for entry in September 2019 will be made available towards the end of August 2018.

What do the children bring?

They should wear home clothes.

They do not need to bring any writing implements.

They are welcome to bring any item, maybe one that they are proud of, to talk about.

What will happen on the day?

The children will take two written tests, one in English and one in Mathematics. Each test lasts for forty-five minutes.

The English test is a Reading Comprehension and a short piece of writing.
As these tests are based on the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, they are suitable for children coming from both independent and state schools.
During the tests teachers will circulate to give encouragement and assistance where necessary.

Children will have a short interview with either the Headmistress or Head of Lower School. Topics to be discussed will include home and family life, interests, both in and out of school, friendships, books recently read and topical issues suitable for their age.

There will be a break for a drink and snack and the children will be observed during a play session.

Our aim is for the children to have a challenging but enjoyable morning.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for children who will be able to achieve at least a level 2B by the end of Year 2. This is the national average and is our minimum entrance requirement.

Our decision is made on the basis of individual observation,  taking into account age and maturity and previous school report, in addition to the results of the written tests.

We welcome children who will make a positive contribution to our school as well as fulfilling our entrance requirements.

What happens next?

You will receive our decision within the week.

If we feel a child has not performed to their ability on the day, is borderline or needs to mature, we may offer a reassessment.

Should a child be ill on the day of the Assessment & Discovery Day they may sit at the next one. In exceptional circumstances individual appointments may be arranged.

Entry at 11+ (Year 7)

Children registered for entry into Year 7 will be invited to attend an annual assessment morning which is held in November prior to the September start.  During the course of the morning they will sit papers in Mathematics and English and participate in other activities with their peer group. You will be asked to provide copies of your child’s most recent school report and a reference will be requested from their current school. Papers are marked promptly and you will hear of the school’s decision by letter within a week.

Assessment dates in November 2018 for entry in September 2019 will be made available towards the end of August 2018.

Entry at other times

We have occasional spaces that become available at different stages.  In this case, children who are already registered with us are invited to join us for a Taster Day.  They will sit papers in Mathematics and English and non-verbal reasoning, and they will spend the rest of the day with their peer group in a normal working environment. You will be asked to provide copies of their most recent school report and a reference will be requested from their current Head.  You will be advised of the outcome of the assessment by letter within a week.
