Year 7 Sports Scholar, Lucas Schmid, has been selected to play for London Irish Under 12s in a tournament in Lyon in May. The team is made up of invitational players from other clubs only and is linked to the Professional Club.
Unbeknownst to Lucas and his dad, who was spectating at the time, Lucas was spotted by a scout whilst competing in a tournament before Christmas with his Effingham and Leatherhead RFC team. where they had come a very close second out of 24 teams, having only lost one game out of seven and by just one try!
Lucas, who began playing rugby at the age of three at Esher Rugby Club, is playing in his first season with Effingham and Leatherhead RFC and is one of just 20 boys to be selected for London Irish and the only one from his club.
Lucas said “I am super, super excited to be chosen! We had no idea there was a scout at the tournament, it was all a surprise”.
Lucas has already had one training session with London Irish and met his fellow team mates and will have one training session with them a month up until the tournament.
All at Feltonfleet are extremely proud of his success, not least, Director of Sport, Mr Ed Smith and Mr Tom Cheeseman, RFU Coach, player with Esher RFC and former Wales Under-19 international.
Mr Morrison said, “Excellent news for this Year 7 boy, who is extremely strong in rugby. In previous years, he would have been playing up a year, but the change of laws has made school rugby frustrating for him. Not that he has let it show in any way”.
Lucas is setting his sites on a Rugby or Sports Scholarship to Epsom College followed by a career in sport, we look forward to hearing all about it!
