Year 6 Boys Qualify for the National Hockey Finals

On Monday 20th February, nine of the Year 6 boys travelled to Tonbridge School in Kent for the Hockey Regional IAPS competition. The boys started off tentatively with a 0-0 draw against Gayhurst. The next game in their pool was against Parkside, who we knew were very strong and the boys did well to keep them to a 0-3 loss. Next were Newton Prep who were a weaker side and the boys confidence grew after a 2-0 win against them. Finally the last pool game was against Danes Hill. The boys intensity in the last game had increased and remained high which resulted in a a 1-0 win in this last pool game. Due to point difference having drawn on points with Danes Hill the boys were delighted to go through to the main Cup competition.

Having moved to the nice new bouncy water based pitch we were drawn against Lambrook and it was tie at 1-1 at the end of the match which meant we had to go to shuffles. This was the first time the boys had done this and both Jack T and Will W scored their shuffles confidently, which was then followed up by a great save from Joe S. This meant we had won the quarter final and had consequently made it through to the top 4 and the National Hockey Finals.

In the Semi final we played Sutton Valance who were no stronger than us but managed to beat us 1-0. The boys were not too disappointed as there were still 3rd place medals to play for. The last game of the day for the boys was against Barrow Hills and Jack T scored a late first half goal and the boys defended well to retain their lead.

Overall the boys came 3rd out of 25 schools and demonstrated their outstanding natural sporting ability and determination and thoroughly deserve their place at the National Finals at Repton on 13th March. Good luck!!
