Year 4 Production Feltonfleet School, Thursday 16th March 2017
Review by Nikki Perkins
“Absolutely brilliant from beginning to end”. “It was so professional.” “I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do that at 8 or 9 years old.” These were just a few of the accolades overheard on the way out of last week’s performance of Revolting Children in the Ashbee Theatre.
Year 4 took to the stage to perform a whistle stop tour of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes including the classics Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Snow White, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. However, if you think you know these innocent little fairy tales, you don’t. According to Year 4, the truth behind them is much more revolting. Surprise endings, wicked beasts, brazen crooks and hilarious one liners were more the order of the day for this fantastically entertaining show.
In a clever twist, the scene was set ‘backstage’ as though the audience had been invited to witness the final dress rehearsal before the big performance. The young actors and actresses never left the stage and cleverly morphed between props and scene changes. All eyes were riveted to the unfolding action and even onstage costume changes went unnoticed (proving Year 4’s are more than capable of hanging up their clothes, despite what they may say).
It was a joy to watch as under the careful guidance of Director Mr David Swann and Producer Miss Lucy Noble, these children’s confidence blossomed. There were some stellar solo performances but in true Feltonfleet style, every child played their part, which is no mean feat when encouraging more than fifty children to sing, dance and act faultlessly.
But most impressive of all was how much both the children and the audience clearly enjoyed every moment. I for one can’t wait to see what they’ll do next year. No pressure Mr Swann!
