Our Spring end of term assembly was a super opportunity to praise our air rifle and .22 shooting squads, who between them have already made exceptional progress and won a variety of awards this year.
Oliver Armstrong demonstrated a superbly calm and measured approach to competition shooting under pressure, to claim the national prize for individual air rifle shot at the recent prep School Championships at Bisley. His score of 86 equals the tournament record!
Tom Hamill came third in the individual .22 shooting, as did the Feltonfleet squad led by captain Joshua Hardy, who have shot consistently so well on the school range this year, that they are now back in Division 1 (the ‘premiership’) of the National League, having gained the St Andrew’s Cup with a clear lead in Division 2. We have a fantastic challenge in trying to outshoot Aardvreck School, who have retained the top spot for many years.
While achieving this, Cameron Montgomerie and Oscar Pearce have won the Pardoe cup for ‘pairs’ .22 shooting, and Feltonfleet pupils have won no less than 3 of the prizes for ‘Best Bull’ shots.
Shooting is now so popular that Major Adcroft is for the first time coming to coach on the .22 range on 2 days a week, and it was a pleasure to welcome him at the assembly where he was delighted to be able to hand over the prizes. Mr Breakwell and Mr Gloster are leading a weekly air rifle club session each, and another first for us is our Spring entry into the air pistol national competition. I am confident that we can follow this with strong contention for the air rifle league in the summer term.
The success of shooting continues this term, with news just received that Joshua Hardy, captain of shooting, and Tom Hamill have been selected to join the national squad of 10 marksmen to compete in an England v. Scotland match, to take place soon.
