Dungeons and Dragons...and Diabolical Digits
On Tuesday 3rd March a group of ten Y5 pupils were led towards a medieval setting at Epsom College for a Mathmagical Adventure. They soon discovered that this entailed working as a team to resolve problems, while an intriguing tale (acted out by Y11 pupils) unfolded, focusing on disappearing numbers. Hence they, along with 11 other teams, worked to resolve mathematical mysteries as they travelled via the castle kitchen and the dungeon to the dragon room. The main challenge was the fear of running into the local dragon, which could be heard on occasion, and which we were told has a penchant for barbequed Y5....but because the pupils had been studying fantastical beasts in their English lessons and had decided that the only dragon to worry about is Dr Hames, they were not overly concerned by the potential danger!
This event was not a competition, but all were impressed by the Feltonfleet team’s prompt and enthusiastic resolution of the trials. The Y11 students who worked to support the team referred to them more than once as ‘genius’.
