'An amazing triumph' is how one adjudicator has described the recent success of the Feltonfleet School .22 rifle squad, who after 3 rounds of competition last term, have been named champions of Division I of the Under 14s League, National Prep Schools' Rifle Association. This is indeed a remarkable achievement, notable for a number of reasons. Just a year ago, the squad was in Division II and gained promotion only at the end of the last summer term. This found them competing against 3 other teams, 2 of which were from Ardvreck in Crieff, Scotland. Ardvreck have maintained a firm hold on the League trophy for many years, representing formidable opponents with members of their squad regularly scoring 100/100 in competition. Feltonfleet were drawn alternatively against each of the Ardvreck teams, and against an Ellesemere team, and all hinged on the final round with Feltonfleet against Ardvreck II. It was a challenge for both teams, with 30cm of snow falling at Crieff, and Surrey not getting off lightly....indeed, the last pupil to shoot for the competition at Feltonfleet was due to do so when the school was closed due to snow! Fortunately, being a Boarder, he was able to complete his target despite the wintry conditions of the outdoor range, scoring an impressive 96 on the day. With a final team score of 591 to beat Ardvreck II's 572, Feltonfleet gained another 2 points to reach a maximum of 6 points for the term's shooting - and the trophy.
There is no doubt that Ardvreck will be determined to regain the title next term, while Feltonfleet will do everything to keep it, and will aim to better an excellent average score of 97.4 out of a possible 100 in every round. It is an exciting time for the school, with 24 pupils shooting regularly on the .22 range under the expert guidance of Major Hylton Adcroft. The lent term will see for the first time in decades, 2 Feltonfleet squads of 8 pupils in each, competing in the national league. The school's first team will face a new entrant to the 1st Division, with the promotion of Terra Nova who have displaced Ardvreck II.
