The children are set for mathematics into three sets. This happens after the third week in Year 3. This enables pupils to work at a pace that suits them and allows them to feel confident in their abilities. Children are regularly monitored and will be moved sets if deemed appropriate at any stage during the year. Children in set 3 will be taught in smaller groups and will have plenty of opportunity to experience practical activities to consolidate learning. Children in set 1 will work at many of the targets for the next year group as well as having extension exercises to broaden their mathematical experiences. A key foundation in childrens’ mathematical development is knowing their tables and we encourage children to learn these by adopting a tables scheme whereby the children receive certificates and badges for achieving each level.
Applied Mathematics
Each year the children take part in a maths workshop designed to promote problem solving through hands on activities. This takes place during our Junior Maths Investigation Week when all maths lessons are used for pupils to take part in investigations and problem solving .
