Children in the Junior School follow a structured programme of English study based upon the English Curriculum and informed by the Primary Literacy Strategy produced by the DfCSF.
Reading comprehension, grammar and principles of writing composition specific to a range of different fiction and non-fiction text genres feature as specific elements of study, complemented by weekly handwriting development tasks and age appropriate spelling tests.
During the Winter Term, Year Three pupils are taught English in their classes, while a combination of formal progress tests and teacher assessment help to support the establishment of sets in the Spring Term.
Year Four children continue to study English in sets. To ensure children are correctly placed and thus receive learning tasks differentiated to their individual needs, children are assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the year with formal progress testing during the Winter, Spring and Summer terms.
