Why Classics? Learning Latin improves understanding of the structure of modern European languages and gives a good base for later study of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese etc as well as helping with the study of French. Learning Latin improves understanding and use of English and gives a child an impressive vocabulary. Learning Latin is like using a ‘brain gym’; it stimulates mental discipline and encourages accuracy and attention to detail when reading. Learning about the Romans helps us to understand more about the history of Britain, Europe and further afield. Learning about the Romans helps us understand our own culture: so much of what we have and do is based in their culture or that of the Greeks before them. Learning Latin and Ancient History gives you great general knowledge! The cross curricular links between Classics and the other subjects taught at school; Maths, Geography, History, Art, ICT, are many and are exploited on an almost daily basis. Year 5 visited Lullingstone Roman villa in June 2009 and the Classics/Art trip again visited Rome and Naples in October 2009. |
