Calvi House > Foundation Stage
Children enter our Nursery in the September after their third birthday. The year they spend in Nursery, together with that in Reception forms the Foundation Stage of their education. Our curriculum broadly follows that of the national Foundation Stage with the addition of French, Swimming, Music, PE and ICT which are taught by specialist teachers alongside class staff. Children attend Nursery every morning, from 8.45 to 12.00 and may stay for the afternoon until 3.30pm if parents wish. Once they enter Reception class they all attend school full-time. We operate a staggered start to the day from 8.15am to 8.45am to fit in with prep school timings. |

We provide a wide range of play experiences designed to allow the children to learn about themselves and the world about them. Classrooms are bright and full of interest to promote curiosity. There are a variety of self-initiated activities for exploration and investigation as well as short planned teaching sessions. We offer activities which are pre-reading, writing and offering the foundations of numeracy as well as the specialist taught subjects – Music, French, ICT, Swimming and PE. The children learn individually, in small groups and as a class. Their understanding of and curiosity for, history, geography, science and technology is developed through a series of topics such as In the Woods and Growing.
At this young age it is important that children have as much access as possible to an outside learning area and we are fortunate to have a new Early Years outdoor learning area which is partially under cover so that it can be used in all weathers.
We are part of the Surrey Early Years Partnership so the parents receive the Nursery grant here. |

Early Years Curriculum
Children’s first experiences with us are vital in determining their attitude to school and their curiosity for future learning. We understand that children enter school with wide variation of maturity and skills. We cater for their individual needs by building on the understanding and experiences they come with. We also take into account the fact that children learn in different ways, at different times and at different rates.
We follow a broad and balanced programme in six areas of learning:
