Boarding at Feltonfleet

Boarding at Feltonfleet is run by the House Parents, Peter and Claire Harnden, supported by a resident team of two matrons, a Senior Tutor and five Boarding Tutors. We are a weekly boarding school able to offer ten beds to girls, in their own wing, and thirty-six beds to boys.

Academic Support

Boarders have a supervised work session on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, at the end of the regular school day. Each boarder has academic targets that are reviewed by the Head of Boarding during this time.

Three weeks before any school examiniations the boarders start their evening revision programme. These sessions are in addition to the work sessions and take place half an hour before bed for the Juniors and 45 minutes for the Seniors.

Personal, Health and Social Development

Each boarder has a designated tutor, who in addition to the House Parents and Matrons, takes a personal interest in the welfare of each of their tutees. Personal targets are set and regularly reviewed with the aim of developing and supporting each boarder's individual needs.

The House staff hold regular meetings with individual dormitories, Year groups, new boarders or even the whole House, where issues such as homesickness, health and hygiene, activities, trips, study skills and friendship issues are talked about.

Being with friends

Ask any boarder what they like about boarding and you can be sure that being with friends would feature highly. In the evenings they are able to play with their friends in a safe and well-supervised environment. Some make up their own games, some take part in organised activities in the Sports Hall or field, the ICT, DT, Art or Music practice rooms. Others relax around the House together in the TV Lounge or games rooms where they occasionally watch DVDs or play computer games.

Opportunities for Leadership

The boarding house is a community and each boarder learns to be a contributor to this community. Both Junior and Senior boarders have leadership opportunities. Juniors take on positions such as games room monitors, while Seniors may become Dormitory Helpers. This is the important role of looking after a dormitory. The top positions in the House are the Head Boy and Girl boarders who help collect views, organise events, give tours of the House to visitors and help new boarders to settle in and learn the new routines.

Boarding Events

This year boarding events have included a Halloween party, Ice Skating, Xmas Meal, Carol evening for parents, theatre trips, Summer BBQ, DJ and drumming workshops and an Easter Egg hunt. Each term the winners of the best Dormitory Competition are also taken to a restaurant as a reward.

Activities

In the evenings the boarders have access to the excellent school facilities. Activities vary and may include supervised use of sports facilities from squash courts to swimming pool, the ICT, DT, and Art room, the TV and games rooms, the music practice rooms and the school fields and woods.

"‘I would like to say that I could not recommend it more. My son has spent most of the past school year as part of the Boarding House and he loves it. There was no hesitation on his part on wanting to continue next year. I had never considered boarding as we live close by and had never left the care of my sons to anyone. My son wanted to board. From the beginning he has been very happy and comfortable sharing a dorm(itory) and participating in activities. The children are too occupied to sit in front of a television, computer or an electronic game each evening. The Boarding House team are brilliant, providing a positive and happy boarding environment. I hope that parents do consider your advice, though boarding at their next school will have a lot to compare to with Feltonfleet setting the bench mark."
