How do I find out more about the School, and how do we register our child?

First of all, visit the rest of our web site, and then request a prospectus. The Registrar, Mrs Kate Patterson will be delighted to answer any further questions which you may have. She will arrange for you to visit the School when you will meet the Headmaster who will show you around the School. If you have an interest in our pre-prep you will also meet the Headmistress, Mrs Jan Preece.

Thereafter, you may decide to register your child for a place in the School. If there isn’t a place available in the required year of entry, it may be necessary for your child to go on the waiting list. The Registrar can provide details.

Registration forms can be found within the prospectus pack, or will be provided on request.

How do we register our child for the Pre-prep?

Calvi House is the Nursery and Pre-Preparatory department of Feltonfleet. Calvi is situated in purpose-built accommodation in its own gardens within the School grounds. Boys and girls enter at three into the Nursery, and would then pass through the three junior classes of the pre-prep, most transferring to the main School at seven.

You will need to register your child at an early stage with the Registrar. She can advise you as to the places available, or the extent of waiting list places. We are currently taking registrations for pupils who have been born since 1st September 2008 to join us in Nursery, September 2012. Entrance is subject to a parental interview with the Head of Calvi, Mrs Jan Preece, and the Headmaster.

Places do occasionally become available higher up the pre-prep. Here a place would be subject to a parental interview, and a very informal and relaxed interview with your child. We would also ask for some transfer information from your child’s present school.

And what if we would like to enter our child into the Main School at 7+?

Again, the Registrar can guide you here. Many of our children join us at 7+, when they would enter the Junior Department. Once you have registered your child, we would invite you to come along to our main Assessment morning in November, or possibly one of those which we scatter across the year.

The Headmaster calls these “Discovery Days”, because that is exactly what they are. We want to find out as much about your child as we can, and whilst there is inevitably some emphasis on testing, we like the occasion (usually a Saturday morning) to be as relaxed and informal as possible. In that we way, we believe that your child is much more likely to be at ease, to show us what they can do, what their interests are, and above all what they would like to achieve if they came to Feltonfleet

So what do these “tests” involve?

Above all, don’t panic, and don’t feel that your child has to be rigorously prepared for them. The morning is organised by our Head of Junior Department, and the tests are in Literacy and Numeracy, and follow very closely the sort of assessments common to the National Curriculum at the relevant Key Stage. Several staff will be on hand to guide the children, respond to their questions, and observe them at work.

We also place a high emphasis on watching the children play creatively, and their social awareness. Each child is briefly interviewed by the Headmaster. The whole thing lasts about an hour and half at which point we will take all the children and their parents on a brisk tour of the School.

Will there be a place for my child higher up the School?

Quite possibly. The Middle School (9-11 years) and the Senior School (11-13), will sometimes have gaps which we would like to fill. It is quite common, for instance, for new pupils to join us from state primary schools at 9 or 11, and we are recruiting an increasing number of girls at 11+, reflecting the increasing trend (common at Feltonfleet, too) for girls to want to stay within their prep school until 13+.

Again the Registrar can advise you. Once we have established that there is a place, we would invite you to bring your child along for an assessment and an interview. Irrespective of the age of your child, this will be done as gently and informally as possible. Assessments in numeracy and literacy are central to this, and for children entering at 10 or 11+, we often ask them to be briefly assessed in some of the core subject areas, as well.

Transfer reports would be requested from the child’s present school before we offered a place. And, we would request that you have notified the present school before your child comes to sit an assessment.
