Scholarship At Feltonfleet

During the past 3 years we have introduced a Scholarship scheme with a view to the possibility of making some awards to pupils moving into Year 7.

Awards will be given up to 50% of fees to children with exceptional talent and ability in the spheres of Academic Ability, Art, Drama, Design Technology, Music and Sport, or recognition of a combination of talents in the form of an All-Rounder Award.

For an outline of how the children (internal and external candidates) would be assessed, please ask for a copy of the Scholarship booklet.

I believe that the key here is to identify potential, as much as it is to recognise past and current performance, and that for any child to be labelled a Scholar, he or she would need to be regarded as an outstanding prospect. Some points which you may wish to note:

  • Art, Drama, Design Technology. Music, Sports, and All-Rounder Scholars will need to demonstrate that they are likely to be good and secure CE candidates at 13.
  • Awards will only be made to especially talented and promising children. There is no certainty at all that we shall make any awards at all.
  • It is possible that awards may be won by children who can indicate promise across the various categories, though we would be looking to recognise all-round excellence. Potential at this age is felt to be the key.
  • There is no certainty at all that any award given to a Year 6 pupil might lead to an award to a senior school.
  • Scholarship pupils will be expected to set the highest standards (behaviour, dress, attitude etc) across the School, and their position reviewed accordinglly

Above all, we do not want children to be groomed for this possibility, and I certainly wouldn't want any child doing any more revision and so forth in readiness than would otherwise be done for the school exams. We would want any candidate to feel that it had been a very good experience, and one they had enjoyed. Stress and exam anxiety is not likely to add to that.

It may be that we are in a position to make a handful of small % awards in recognition of the talent and potential that certain children offer the School. You will understand, then, that the ultimate judgement lies with the School, and we hope that you will trust and respect our counsel on any decision accordingly.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss any of these issues.
