Assessment Mornings & Discovery Visits

The main intake ages for Feltonfleet are 3+ (Nursery), 7+ (Year 3) and 11+ (Year 7), although we do consider applications at other ages depending on the availability of spaces.

Once you register your child, that registration is valid for entry at any point and children who are unsuccessful at gaining a place in Nursery remain registered and therefore are automatically eligible to be considered for a place year by year as occasional spaces open up. While some families seek an occasional place, others will join Feltonfleet at 7+ when we expand the year group.

Entry into our Pre-Prep (Nursery, Reception and Years 1 and 2)

Children wishing to join our Pre-Prep are invited for a Discovery Visit, to familiarise themselves with the Feltonfleet environment, get to know our staff team, and begin to make social connections. Discovery Visits are also an opportunity for us to get to know your little ones.

Entry into our Lower School at 7+ and 8+ (Years 3 and 4)

When are assessments held?

Assessments are usually held in the November prior to the year of entry.

For entry to Years 3 and 4 in September 2024 assessments will take place on:

Saturday 11th November 2023

What will happen on the day?

The children will take two written tests, one in English and one in Mathematics. Each test lasts for forty-five minutes.

The English test is a Reading Comprehension and a short piece of writing.
As these tests are based on the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, they are suitable for children coming from both independent and state schools.
During the tests teachers will circulate to give encouragement and assistance where necessary.

Children will have a short interview with either the Headmistress or Head of Lower School. Topics to be discussed will include home and family life, interests, both in and out of school, friendships, books recently read and topical issues suitable for their age.

There will be a break for a drink and snack and the children will be observed during a play session.

Our aim is for the children to have a challenging but enjoyable morning.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for children who will be able to achieve at least a level 2B by the end of Year 2. This is the national average and is our minimum entrance requirement.

Our decision is made on the basis of individual observation,  taking into account age and maturity and previous school report, in addition to the results of the written tests.

We welcome children who will make a positive contribution to our school as well as fulfilling our entrance requirements.

What happens next?

You will receive our decision within two weeks.

If we feel a child has not performed to their ability on the day, is borderline or needs to mature, we may offer a reassessment.

Entry at 9+ (Year 5) and 11+ (Year 7)

Children registered for entry into Year 5 and 7 will be invited to attend an annual assessment morning which is held in November prior to the September start.

For entry to Year 5 in September 2024 assessments will take place on:

Saturday 11th November 2023

For entry to Year 7 in September 2024 assessments will take place on:

Friday 24th November 2023

During the course of the morning they will sit papers in Mathematics and English and participate in other activities with their peer group. You will be asked to provide copies of your child’s most recent school report and a reference will be requested from their current school. Papers are marked promptly and you will hear of the school’s decision by letter within two weeks.

Entry at other times

We have occasional spaces that become available at different stages.  In this case, children who are already registered with us are invited to join us for a Discovery Day.  They will sit papers in Mathematics and English and non-verbal reasoning, and they will spend the rest of the day with their peer group in a normal working environment. You will be asked to provide copies of their most recent school report and a reference will be requested from their current Head.  You will be advised of the outcome of the assessment by letter within two weeks.
